Inclusive policies

We encourage an inclusive culture, which comes to life in for instance through the option to swap public holidays, use paid paternity leave of 6 weeks, and through our transgender policy;

  • Interchangable holidays: Do you celebrate Diwali, Eid, Hanukkah, Lunar New Year or other holidays that are not reflected by the official National Public Holidays in the Netherlands? In line with our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion priorities, we want to better represent all employees that work at Unilever in the Netherlands. This comes with the recognition that cultural or religious holidays are equally important, but individually driven. This special leave policy allows you to take these days and celebrate your holidays by choosing to exchange/swap holidays.
  • Paternity leave: next to the regular 16 weeks maternity leave we offer to our female colleagues, we offer 6 weeks fully paid paternity leave after the birth of a child for the partner.

Working from home

At the moment, we work from home. We will ensure you are well equipped for this. Of course we hope to welcome employees back in our offices soon, where everyone can enjoy our tasty canteens with food prepped using our own products.

A BEACON of inclusion

At Unilever, we strive to be a BEACON of inclusion for the LGBTQI+ community and allies amplifying their voice in society and at Unilever to enable them to be their true authentic selves. From peer-to-peer support by our proUd network to policies that promote and protect a fully inclusive workplace via our #Unstereotype program, we have a variety of resources that will support colleagues and allies on their LGBTQI+ exploration journey.

First of all, ProUd is a global employee network within Unilever which now has more than 1,250 members and plays an essential role in supporting employees and creating change in the workplace. The Netherlands had its PRIDE network founded in 2013 and merged into proUd in 2020 with around 55 active members now, and that number is growing every year. In the Netherlands, we actively support Pride Rotterdam and Pride Amsterdam.

For colleagues, we’ve also set up Safe Spaces to provide an understanding support channel for our LGBTQI+ community in areas where support may be difficult or unsafe to find. We also provide tools and advice for employees on how to be an ally and designed a Queer-iosity learning pathway to deepen one’s knowledge and awareness of the richness of the LGBTQI+ community.

Externally, Unilever was recognized by Workplace Pride in ’21 as a company in the private sector that made the most progress in terms of LGBTIQ+ inclusion and in 2020 Alan Jope signed the Declaration of Amsterdam a global statement of support for LGBTQI+ rights.

Unleashing the potential in others for a better business and a better world is my purpose. I don't believe in ‘Human Resources’, I believe in people wanting to be at their best. No one wants to waste their talent. As a sports fan, I learnt that team-play gets the best out of people and makes them thrive.
– Jeroen Wels, Executive Vice President HR - Beauty & Personal Care, Talent & Performance Development at Unilever
